Teachers always told me to learn from music when I was a kid, but in the 80's it wasn't that easy to manage lyrics in English. One had to buy the record or wait some friend to do so, in order to copy the lyrics from it. I spent many school breaks handwriting songs!
I found another way by going to a musical instruments shop. I had to take a bus, enter the shop and ask for the sheet music folder, select songs, let my identification card (like in a library), cross the avenue, enter the mall, head to the xerox shop, and then return all the way back home.
Of course I also tried listening to the song and getting to understand what was sung, but it produced some senseless sentences. It's weird, but I still sing the songs I tried to get on my own that way!
