Grammar
If you’ll remember, way back in the lesson on Like or Dislike we covered nouns only. In this lesson we learn how to like or dislike verbs, plus a lot more. Gusto and ayaw are called Pseudo-Verbs, which are special adjectives that resemble verbs. This is the first of two groups; the second group is in the next lesson.
About Group 1 Pseudo-Verbs: although I listed 7 above, we aren’t going to use ibig or nais because they aren’t as common as gusto, and we’ll drop meron because we covered it already. That leaves us with gusto, ayaw, kailangan and kaya.
Let’s take a basic-sentence:
Ex: Magluluto rin ang lalaki ng manok.
Show
= The boy will cook chicken too.
Show
and add the pseudo-verb kailangan:
Ex: Kailangan rin ng lalaking magluto ng manok.
Show
= The boy needs to cook chicken too.
Show
Here’s what we did:
a) put the pseudo-verb (kailangan) in front
b) the pseudo-verb is an enclitic magnate, so put enclitics (rin) after it
c) for Group 1 AF pseudo-verbs only, change the actor from ang form to ng form (ang lalaki becomes ng lalaki)
d) for Group 1 AF pseudo-verbs only, put the actor (ng lalaki) at the end of the enclitic cluster. Actually this is optional, and it can be done for either group, but it’s common for Group 1 so that’s what we’ll do.
e) add the linker to the last word in the enclitic cluster(lalaki becomes lalaking)
f) change the verb aspect to infinitive (magluluto becomes magluto)
It may look a bit daunting when it’s broken down like this, but it starts to stick after a little practice.
Note Summary
Word order <pseudo-verb, linker, basic-sentence>
For Group 1 AF pseudo-verb basic-sentences, actor always changes to ng-form and goes at the end of the enclitic cluster
For all other basic-sentences, actor doesn’t change form and goes in the enclitic cluster only if it’s a personal pronoun
Remember that a linker between a consonant and a verb infinitive is blank, not na
