Grammar
If you do not know it already, please go to Appendix A and memorize ang form pronoun ikaw before attempting this lesson.
Here is a standard sentence:
Ex: Kumain si David ng halo-halo.
Show
= David ate halo-halo.
Show
The focus is David. David is in the middle of the Tagalog sentence, which is normal. But it is also possible to express the same thing by “inverting” the sentence to make the focus come first. This lesson is about sentences created using the ay inversion, which I call ay sentences for short. They may sound a bit bookish or formal to native speakers, but they are not uncommon.
Warning – Your goal should be to recognize and understand these when you encounter them, but I recommend that you do not use these in colloquial speech for the time being. You will not be wrong or misunderstood if you do, but you will not be talking like a native if you frequently use these. And because native English speakers often find these easier to produce due to their English-like subject-predicate structure, there is a great temptation to do just that. So, to discourage that habit I will limit their use to this lesson.
Formation
Ay sentences are formed the same as non-ay sentences, except you put the focus first, followed by ay, then the remainder of the sentence:
Ay Sentence. = Focus + ay + (sentence without focus).
Notes: Remember focus always takes ang form.
Word Order Similar to English
Subject is Predicate Ex: Pagkain ang adobo.
Show
= Adobo is food.
Show
Ay sentence: Ang adobo ay pagkain.
Show
= Adobo is food.
Show
Subject is Adjective Ex: Puti ang mga sasakyan.
Show
= The cars are white.
Show
Ay sentence: Ang mga sasakyan ay puti.
Show
= The cars are white.

Ay sentence: Si David ay kumain ng halo-halo.

Show
= David did not eat halo-halo.
Show
Ay sentence: Si David ay hindi kumain ng halo-halo.
Show
= David did not eat halo-halo.
Show
These are structures that you have already learned, inverted with ay. Notice that, except for the ay, the ay sentence word order is the same as English. That is why they are tempting to use for native English speakers. However, in addition to not being as common, many ay structures do not use English word order:

Although this is just a sample of ay sentences, it should be enough so that when you hear new ones in the wild you will be able to understand them.
Ikaw is used instead of ka at the beginning of sentences.
Ikaw is the singular ang form of “you” which must be used at the beginning of ay-sentences.
Ex: Ikaw po ay maganda.
Show
= You are beautiful. (resp.)
Show
Ex: Ikaw ba ay mahilig sa adobo?
Show
= Do you like adobo?
Show
Ex: Ikaw ay kumain ng halo-halo ko!
Show
= You ate my halo-halo!
Show
Notice that ikaw is a host, but not enclitic itself.
The contracted form of ay is ’y
Normally, you can contract ay to ’y if the preceding word ends in a vowel, n or w (’y replaces the n or w).
