Forming Noun Phrases from various Parts of Speech
Here is a very versatile way to form noun phrases.
General Noun Phrase = Ang/ng/sa + verb/adj/etc.
Ex: Kumain ako ng mainit.
Show
= I ate a hot one. (ng + adj)
Show
Ex: Asawa ko ang nasa bahay bukas.
Show
= My wife is the one who will be home tomorrow. (ang + nasa phrase)
Show
Ex: Sabihin mo ang totoo sa nagbigay.
Show
= Tell the truth to the one who gave. (sa + verb)
Show
Reported Speech
To report speech in Tagalog:
Sinabi + Speaker + Linker + Phrase = Speaker said that phrase.
Note: Speaker takes ng form.
Ex: Sinabi kong hindi mabilis ang sasakyan mo.
Show
= I said that your car is not fast.
Show
Ex: Sinabi ni Angel na pupunta si Maria sa Pilipinas.
Show
= Angel said that Maria will go to the Philippines.
Show
Ex: Sinabi nila sa aking taga-Seattle ang guro.
Show
= They told me that the teacher is from Seattle.
Show
Notice that the same structure works for other verbs:
Ex: Sinagot kong hindi mabilis ang sasakyan mo.
Show
= I answered that your car is not fast.
Show
Ex: Naisip ni Angel na pupunta si Maria sa Pilipinas.
Show
= Angel thought that Maria will go to the Philippines.
Show
Ex: Naalala nilang taga-Seattle ang guro.
Show
= They remembered that the teacher is from Seattle.
Show
Reported Speech Short form & Direct Speech
To report speech without the “that”:
Sabi + Speaker, Phrase. = Speaker said phrase.
Note: Speaker takes ng form.
Ex: Sabi ko, hindi mabilis ang sasakyan mo.
Show
= I said your car is not fast.
Show
Ex: Sabi ni Angel, pupunta si Maria sa Pilipinas.
Show
= Angel said Maria will go to the Philippines.
Show
Ex: Sabi nila sa akin, taga-Seattle ang guro.
Show
= They told me the teacher is from Seattle.
Show
You can use the same structure for other roots:
Ex: Tingin ko, nasa bahay si Joe.
Show
= I think Joe is home.
Show
Ex: Alam ko, ibinili niya nito si David.
Show
= I know she bought this for David.
Show
Ex: *Sa tingin ko, maganda siya.
Show
= I think she is beautiful.
Show
*Because it is more colloquial, we will use sa tingin ko rather than tingin ko.
We call this the “short form”. To be consistent, in the sample sentences we will use the long form when “that” is used in the English translation, and the short form when it is not. More on the short form in a future lesson.
The same structure, with quotation marks, is used to quote direct speech in Tagalog:
Ex: Sabi ko, “Hindi mabilis ang sasakyan mo”.
Show
= I said, “Your car is not fast”.
Show
Ex: Sabi ni Angel, “Pupunta si Maria sa Pilipinas”.
Show
= Angel said, “Maria will go to the Philippines”.
Show
Ex: Sabi nila sa akin, “Taga-Seattle ang guro”.
Show
= They said to me, “The teacher is from Seattle”.
