Grammar
This lesson covers some common ways to say “before” and “previously” in Tagalog by using bago and dati.
Bago
As an adverb, bago means “before”. It can be used with a noun.
bago + noun (Tag.) = before (the) noun (Eng.)
Notes: Noun takes ang form.
Ex: bago ang sasakyan
Show
= before the car (this can also mean “the car is new” - see bago as an adjective below)
Show
Ex: Gusto kong pumunta doon bago ang Huwebes.
Show
= I want to go there before Thursday.
Show
Ex: Kinain niya ang lechon bago ang trabaho.
Show
= She ate the lechon before work.
Show
It can also be used with a clause.
bago + clause (Tag.) = before clause (Eng.)
Ex: Sinagot niya ang tanong bago ko siya tinanong.
Show
= She answered the question before I asked her.
Show
Ex: Bago ako maglalaro ng basketball, magbibisikleta ako.
Show
= Before I play basketball I will bicycle.
Show
Ex: Kailangan niyang bumili ng manok bago magluto ng adobo.
Show
= She needs to buy chicken before cooking adobo.
Show
In the last example, notice that the infinitive magluto means “cooking”; you saw something similar with tapos. As an adjective, bago means “new”.
Ex: bago mong sasakyan
Show
= your new car
Show
Ex: Gusto ko ng bagong bahay.
Show
= I want a new house.
Show
Ex: Yun ba ang bagong babae?
Show
= Is that the new girl?
Show
Dati
As an adverb, dati means “previously”. It is normally placed at the end of a phrase.
Phrase + dati (Tag.) = Phrase previously (Eng.)
Ex: Hindi siya mahilig sa sasakyan dati.
Show
= He did not like cars previously.
Show
Ex: Nagturo ang guro ng Tagalog dati.
Show
= The teacher taught Tagalog previously.
Show
Ex: Nasa Cebu si Vanessa dati.
Show
= Vanessa was in Cebu previously.
Show
As an adjective, it means “former/previous/ex”.
Ex: dati niyang asawa
Show
= his/her ex wife/husband
Show
Ex: Mas gusto ko ang dating sasakyan.
Show
= I prefer the previous car.
Show
Ex: Dating pangulo ba siya?
Show
= Is he the ex-president?
