Grammar
This is a collection of things you will hear in the wild that are not covered in other parts of this book.
Contractions/Shortenings/Morphings
These are extremely common. Here are a few examples.
sa’yo
Show
= sa iyo
Show
san
Show
= saan
Show
‘yan
Show
= yun
Show
d’on
Show
= dun
Show
b’at
Show
= bakit
Show
It is usually not too difficult to recognize these in the wild. They will not be in the sample sentences.
Interjections
There are many interjections, or short exclamations, in Tagalog. Some of the most common ones are listed in the vocabulary. You will have an opportunity to practice them in the sample sentences. They will be in this lesson only.
Pa- Adverbs/Adjectives
Pa- is a somewhat low frequency affix, but when it pops up it often seems understandable, and may make you wonder if you guessed the correct meaning. With adverbs, you can normally drop it without changing the meaning:
patungkol
Show
= tungkol = about
Show
papaano
Show
= paano = to what extent
Show
With adjectives, it adds the nuance of “becoming root”, and causes a stress shift to the last syllable:
painít
Show
= getting hot (compare to mainit = hot)
Show
pailalím
Show
= going under (compare to ilalim = under)
Show
It is good to be able to recognize these, but they will not be in the sample sentences.
