Conflicts in Myanmar
This year, after the democratic election of the civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a military coup has taken place in the country, likewse peaceful protests calling for a restoration of democracy.
Over the last weekend, it has been alleged that the deadliest day since the takeover was on Saturday, when the miilitaries were showcasing Myanmar's prowess whereas their colleagues were unleashing batons and bullets on protesters, workers, labour leaders and even children. Basically, citizens hit the street to protest against the coup and ask for Suu Kyi's releasing. Without even considering the legitimacy of the movement, policies and militaries have been killing the individuals they were supposedly to protect.
The international community has led the condemnation of the violence perpetrated by the junta. On this note, the United State has suspended their trade engagement with the country. Furthermore, Myanmar allies, like China, don't approve such bloody clashes. As far as United Nations measures, they have condemned the brutality but they have not considered possible sanctions to the militaries, which would require either China's support or abstention in the security council.
In shorting, the attempts to restore democracy in Myanmar have failed to sway militaries so far. Plus, the national media has been supporting the current regime by mitigating the seriousness of the bloodshed. For instance, in the last conflict, at least 100 people were killed by the military forces. However, they pledged the death roll was 49 people and that the protesters had used bombs and guns against security forces, which would consist of a threat to "state tranquility and security". Certainly. the media will be constantly used in order to keep people from reliable information and democracy will remain as an utopia for now.
Hopefully, they will be having better days in the near future, and international community will take more effective action in order to help this country.
