Can mebendazole treat fungal infections?
Mebendazole Over The Counter is an effective medication for treating parasitic worm infections, such as roundworms, pinworms, hookworms, and whipworms. However, it is not effective against fungal infections. Mebendazole works by disrupting the microtubule formation in parasitic worms, which prevents them from absorbing nutrients and eventually leads to their death. Fungi, on the other hand, have a completely different cellular structure and metabolism, so drugs like Mebendazole do not target or affect them. Fungal infections require antifungal medications such as fluconazole, itraconazole, or terbinafine, which work by disrupting the fungal cell membrane or inhibiting enzymes critical for fungal growth. Using Mebendazole for a fungal infection will not eliminate the fungus and may delay appropriate treatment. It is essential to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and to use the correct medication for the type of infection you have.
