HAM AS A PEOPLE AND A TRIBE
I am of the above subject tribe located mainly in the southern part of Kaunda, Nigeria. A little knowledge in my people's history told me that my people were formerly subjects to the then northern emirate of Zaria in Nigeria, as such we were referred to as people of southern Zaria. Zaria was and still is a Hausa speaking region of Nigeria. Every village head was answerable to the Emire in Zaria, that in turn affected or influenced our native tongue (Hyam) such that it was difficult to make a complete sentence in Hyam without an inclusion of Hausa. That in fact led to my people being called jaba instead of Ham. We would all agree that no man can name a thing or being in a language not known by such person. The word Jaba in not a part of our language (Hyam) as such it cannot stand as a valid name for her people.
