I'm certainly not a fanatic of soap operas, but I like TV shows of all genres and I quite enjoy those which delve in the human psyche and personal relationships. That being said, I have to agree with some people in the fact that some soaps are too far-fetched, the storylines are unconvincing, the characters are stereotyped and the ends are totally predictable. Nevertheless, that doesn't have to be necessarily bad if they did that on purpose in other to amuse the audience. That's what Jane the Virgin does. It is a TV show that parodies some of the characteristics of a telenovela and makes fun of them, sometimes explicitly. It has those unconvincing and eccentric characters, it's corny at times and the plot is absolutely contrived to the point of ridiculous. Nevertheless, some of the characters and situations are realistic and very well put up, in my opinion. The acting is good, sometimes intentionally overdramatized. That mix of realism and absurd makes it absolutely hilarious. So I may not be a big fan of the genre, but I quite enjoy a good soap opera.
