Grammar
Tagalog adverbs have many uses. This is the first of two lessons on adverbs. In this lesson, we will show some ways they are used to modify verbs. The second lesson, which you will see later on in the book, will cover adverbs in general.
Duration: nang + adv
You can often put nang + adv on the end of a sentence to indicate the duration of an action.
Ex: Nag-alala ako nang dalawang araw.
Show
= I worried for two days.
Show
Ex: Mag-aaral si Maria nang limang oras.
Show
= Maria will study for five hours.
Show
Ex: Nagbisikleta siya nang labintatlong segundo.
Show
= She bicycled for 13 seconds.
Show
But be careful because sometimes a period of time is just an object, rather than a duration of the action:
Ex: Magbibigay ako ng dalawang oras.
Show
= I will give two hours.
Show
But:
Ex: Magbibigay ako nang dalawang oras.
Show
= I will give for (a duration of) two hours.
Show
Period: adv
For some adverbs that indicate the period an action takes place, you can put the plain adverb on the end of a sentence without using a particle.
Ex: Naghanap si Jason ng guro kahapon.
Show
= Jason looked for a teacher yesterday.
Show
Ex: Naghahanap si Jason ng guro ngayon.
Show
= Jason is looking for a teacher today.
Show
Ex: Naghahanap si Jason ng guro araw-araw.
Show
= Jason looks for a teacher every day.
Show
Ex: Naghahanap si Jason ng guro bawat umaga.
Show
= Jason looks for a teacher each morning.
Show
Ex: Maghahanap si Jason ng guro bukas.
Show
= Jason will look for a teacher tomorrow.
Show
Period: sa/tuwing/nung + adv
For some adverbs that indicate the period an action takes place, you will need to put sa/tuwing/nung + adv on the end of the sentence, as shown in these examples. Nung is just nun + linker.
Ex: Magluluto kami ng manok sa gabi.
Show
= We (excl.) will cook chicken at night. Note that sa indicates a future event.
Show
Ex: Naglalaro sila ng basketbol tuwing Miyerkules.
Show
= They play basketball every Wednesday. Note that tuwing indicates a repeating or habitual event.
Show
Ex: Hindi nagbisikleta si Jasmine papunta sa Maynila nung taong dalawang libo't dalawampu.
Show
= Jasmine did not bicycle to Manila in 2020. Note that nung indicates a past event.
Show
Beses: nang + adj + linker + beses
Beses can be used to form an adverb of frequency:
Ex: Nagmaneho ka sa Maynila nang maraming beses.
Show
= You have driven in Manila many times.
Show
Ex: Hindi magtuturo si Sir Santos kay Angel nang dalawang beses.
Show
= Mr. Santos will not teach Angel twice.
Show
Ex: Naglagay na ako ng pagkain dito nang sandaang beses.
Show
= I put some food here one hundred times already.
