Grammar
You were introduced to some adverbs that modify verbs in an earlier lesson. It turns out there is a broader definition: Tagalog adverbs and adverb phrases, which I will collectively call “adverbs”, modify verbs, adjectives, other adverbs or groups of words in order to express time, location, manner, etc. In this lesson we will list the adverbs you have already seen, and give you some rules for using new ones.
Some Adverbs that you have Already Seen
Enclitic Particles
Ex: Mahilig po ba kayo sa halo-halo?
Show
= Do you like halo-halo? (resp.)
Show
Sa Phrases
Ex: Igagawa nila ng pagkain si Maria sa gabi.
Show
= They will make food for Maria at night.
Show
Para Phrases
Ex: Kinukuha ni David ito para kay Joe.
Show
= David is getting this for Joe.
Show
Nang Phrases
Ex: Tawagin mo si Joshua nang alas siyete ng gabi.
Show
= Call out to Joshua at 7pm.
Show
Nun/kapag/kung Phrases
Ex: Mag-aaral ako kapag nasa sasakyan ako.
Show
= I will study when I am in the car.
Show
Although all of the underlined items above are adverbs, some constructions are non-adverbs in different situations. For example, sa Manila in Maganda ang bahay sa Manila is an adjective because it modifies a noun.
Rules for using new Adverbs
Although the definition of adverbs is wide, if you know these two things you will be able to correctly use new ones that you encounter in the wild:
Position. Adverbs can be enclitic, moveable, initial, or sentence final.
Particle. It might take no particle. It might take sa before it, sa after it, might need a linker, nang, nung, etc. It might work with multiple particles.
What follows are some examples of adverb usage.
Time Adverbs
Time adverbs are moveable:
Ex: Nagbigay si Angel ng mangga kay Joe kahapon.
Show
= Angel gave Joe a mango yesterday.
Show
Ex: Nagbigay si Angel ng mangga kahapon kay Joe.
Show
= Angel gave Joe a mango yesterday.
Show
Ex: Nagbigay si Angel kahapon ng mangga kay Joe.
Show
= Angel gave Joe a mango yesterday.
Show
Ex: Nagbigay kahapon si Angel ng mangga kay Joe.
Show
= Angel gave Joe a mango yesterday.
Show
To be consistent, we will always put time adverbs at the end. Some adverbs, like Biyernes, require particles. Here are examples of particles used with all three aspects:
Ex: Nag-aral ako nung Biyernes.
Show
= I studied last Friday.
Show
Ex: Nag-aaral ako tuwing Biyernes.
Show
= I study every Friday.
Show
Ex: Mag-aaral ako sa Biyernes.
Show
= I will study next Friday.
Show
Nang Manner Adverbs
Manner adverbs describe the manner in which an action is carried out. One way to form these is with nang.
Nang Manner Adverb = Nang + Adj
Ex: Niluto niya ang pagkain nang mabilis.
Show
= She cooked the food quickly.
Show
Ex: Niluto niya ang pagkain nang dalawang beses.
Show
= She cooked the food twice.
Show
Ex: Niluto niya ang pagkain nang maganda.
Show
= She cooked the food beautifully.
Show
Optionally, you can put the adjective before the verb:
Adj manner adverb = Adj + linker
Ex: Mabilis na niluto niya ang pagkain.
Show
= She cooked the food quickly.
Show
Also, you can put the nang + adj after the verb and enclitics:
Ex: Niluto niya nang mabilis ang pagkain.
Show
= She cooked the food quickly.
Show
But to be consistent we will use first structure shown above.
Initial Adverbs
Initial adverbs can only be used at the beginning of phrases. There are only a few of these, and the most common is baka, which means “maybe”. It does not take a particle.
Ex: Baka nasa bahay ang asawa ni Maria.
Show
= Maybe Maria’s husband is home.
Show
Ex: Baka iniinom niya ang tubig.
Show
= Maybe he is drinking the water.
Show
Ex: Baka itinanim ni David ang puno.
Show
= Maybe David planted the tree.
Show
Sentence Ending Adverbs
There are four adverbs, a, e, ha and o, which are particles that go on the end of a sentence only. Here are some of their meanings.
A adds the nuance “surprisingly”, or indicates an outcome contrary to expectations:
Ex: Masarap ito, a!
Show
= This is surprisingly delicious!
Show
E adds the nuance “because”, or indicates the sentence is the reason:
Ex: Kumain na ako, e.
Show
= Because I already ate.
Show
Ha adds insistence:
Ex: Maglalaro kami bukas, ha?
Show
= We are playing tomorrow, ok?
Show
O increases urgency:
Ex: Tanungin mo siya, o.
Show
= Please ask her.
Show
Although these are common, they are quite casual and may even come off as rude, so we will not use them in the sample sentences.
Talaga
Talaga is a very common adverb of manner that means “really”. It can be used to modify hosts and adjectives. When it modifies hosts, it belongs with the enclitic particles.
Ex: Pumunta ka ba talaga sa Pilipinas?
Show
= Did you really go to the Philippines?
Show
Ex: Mag-aaral din ba talaga siya ng Tagalog?
Show
= Will he really also study Tagalog?
Show
Ex: Gusto mo ba talagang lutuin ang adobo?
Show
= Do you really want to cook the adobo?
Show
When it modifies adjectives, it behaves just like an adjective: it can go before or after. There is a linker if it goes before, but not if it goes after.
Ex: Maganda talaga ang babae.
Show
= The woman is really beautiful.
Show
Ex: Talagang maganda ang babae.
Show
= The woman is really beautiful.
Show
Ex: Mahilig ako sa talagang mabilis na sasakyan.
Show
= I like really fast cars.
Show
It is also used as a stand-alone expression:
Ex: Talaga?
Show
= Really?
Show
Dahil
Dahil is called a “causative” adverb, and means “due to” when followed by sa + noun:
Ex: Hindi ako nagbisikleta dahil sa ulan.
Show
= I did not bicycle due to the rain.
Show
Ex: Mahirap si Luis dahil sa asawa niya.
Show
= Luis is poor due to his wife.
Show
Ex: Hindi nila siya nakita dahil sa ilaw.
Show
= They did not see her due to the light.
Show
It means “because” when followed by an equivalency statement:
Ex: Kakain siya dahil masarap ang pagkain.
Show
= He will eat because the food is delicious.
Show
It also means “because” when followed by a clause:
Ex: Masaya si Joe dahil nanalo siya ng maraming pera.
Show
= Joe is happy because he won a lot of money.
Show
We are going to use a different word for “because”, so dahil will mean “due to” and only be followed by sa + noun in this book. Dahil is an enclitic host:
Ex: Dahil lang sa ilaw, nakita nila siya.
Show
= Only due to the light, were they able to see her.
Show
More about Tungkol
As mentioned in an earlier lesson, tungkol is a preposition that roughly means “about”. It can also be used as an adverb. Like dahil, it is followed by sa + noun:
Ex: Magsasabi siya sa amin tungkol sa Seattle.
Show
= She will tell us about Seattle.
Show
Here tungkol sa Seattle is just an adverbial phrase and does not get marked by ng like an object. However, if you want to make it into the focus, remember the focus takes ang form, so in this case you must mark it with ang.
Ex: Sinabi niya sa amin ang totoo tungkol sa Seattle.
Show
= She told us the truth about Seattle.
Show
Ex: Sinabi niya sa amin ang tungkol sa Seattle.
Show
= She told us (that thing) about Seattle.
Show
Tungkol is an enclitic host:
Ex: Tungkol ba ito sa Seattle?
Show
= Is it about Seattle?
Show
