Grammar
In this lesson we will discuss the concept of “with” or “and”, in expressions like “with Joe”, “my wife and I”, “she and Maria”. We will also discuss the reflexive using sarili.
Sa
As was mentioned in a previous lesson, sa and sa form personal pronouns, may have the meaning of “with”, depending on context.
Ex: Naglaro ang bata sa aso.
Show
= The child played with the dog. “On/at/in the dog” are also possible, but unlikely.
Show
Ex: May aso sa bata.
Show
= There is a dog with the kid. “On the kid” is also possible.
Show
Ex: Walang aso kay Maria.
Show
= There is not a dog with Maria. “On Maria” is also possible.
Show
Ex: Merong aso sa kanila.
Show
= There is a dog with them. “At/in their place” and “on them” are also possible.
Show
X and Y using Plural Personal Pronouns
Suppose you want to say “my wife and I” in Tagalog. Here are three possibilities:
Ex1: ako at ang asawa ko
Show
(lit. I and my wife)
Show
Ex2: ako kasama ang asawa ko
Show
(lit. I together with my wife)
Show
Ex3: kami ng asawa ko
Show
(lit. we of my wife)
Show
Ex1 is used in ay sentences, which are to be avoided for reasons stated earlier, and Ex2 is a bit rare. If you want to say “X and Y” for two people and at least one of them is a personal pronoun, you should use the construction in Ex3.
plural personal pronoun + Y (Tag.) = X and Y (Eng.)
Notes: X and Y are both people and one is a personal pronoun. Y takes ng form. If the plural personal pronoun is ang or ng form, the entire phrase is enclitic.
Ex: Pupunta sila ni Maria sa Maynila.
Show
= He/She/They and Maria will go to Manila.
Show
Ex: Gusto ba ninyo ni Joe buksan ang pinto?
Show
= Do you and Joe want to close the door?
Show
Ex: Ginagawa niya ang halo-halo para sa amin ni David.
Show
= She is making the halo-halo for David and us (excl.).
Show
Kasama
In Ex2 above, kasama is used as an adverb that roughly means “with”. It is not as common as Ex3 for people, so we will not use kasama as an adverb anymore in this book. But we will use it as a noun. It roughly means “something that goes with something else”, and is often translated as “companion”.
Ex: Sino ang kasama mo?
Show
= Who is your companion? Who is with you?
Show
Ex: Tagasaan ang kasama ni Joshua?
Show
= Where is Joshua’s companion from?
Show
Ex: Tinanong ako ng kasama ko.
Show
= My companion questioned me.
Show
Sarili
Sarili can mean “own”, as in “my own”, “their own”, etc. In this case, sarili is an adjective, so the following is just the ng possessive with adjective structure that you learned earlier:
sarili + linker + possession + possessor = possessor’s own possession
Note: Possessor takes ng form.
Ex: Binuksan niya ang sarili niyang pinto.
Show
= She opened her own door.
Show
Ex: Ito ang sariling sasakyan ni Analyn.
Show
= This is Analyn’s own car.
Show
Ex: Mahilig sila sa sarili nilang pagkain.
Show
= They like their own food.
Show
It can also mean “self”, as in “myself”, “themselves”, etc. This is how the reflexive is formed in Tagalog:
Ex: Binuksan ko ang pinto sa sarili ko.
Show
= I opened the door myself.
Show
Ex: Tinitingan ni Analyn ang sarili niya.
Show
= Analyn looked at herself.
Show
Ex: Magluluto sila para sa sarili nila.
Show
= They will cook for themselves.
Show
These are just ng possessives, so remember that they may also be expressed as sa possessives:
Ex: Binuksan ko ang pinto sa aking sarili.
Show
= I opened the door myself.
Show
As stated previously, this is less common so we will only use the ng possessive form.
It is possible to use the adverb mismo instead of sarili:
Ex: Binuksan ko mismo ang pinto.
Show
= I opened the door myself.
Show
But mismo is less common than sarili, so we will not use it anymore.
