Grammar
In previous lessons you have seen several ways to say “have” or “got” in Tagalog. In this lesson we will summarize them and give you some new ones.
Ways to say “Have” or “Got” that you have Seen
Verbs with the root kuha:
Ex: Kumuha ako ng sasakyan.
Show
= I got/took a car. (Just reporting a fact.)
Show
Um- verbs with the nuance “to become adjective”
Ex: Lumaki ako.
Show
= I got/became big. (There was a process involved.)
Show
May:
Ex: May sasakyan ako.
Show
= I have a car. (Just reporting a fact.)
Show
Meron:
Ex: Meron akong sasakyan.
Show
= I have a car. (Just reporting a fact.)
Show
Magka-
Magka- is a verb prefix that can have several traits, one of which is to add the nuance “come to have” or “acquire”. These are AF verbs whose aspects are formed similar to maka- verbs.
Ex: root = pera, infinitive = magkapera, aspects
Show
= nagkapera, nagkákapera, magkákapera
Show
Notice that the stress stays on the same vowel in the root as in the infinitive, and in the uncompleted and contemplated aspects the first ka is always stressed. Magka- indicates that there was a process involved:
Ex: Baka magkakaanak sila.
Show
= Maybe they will end up having a child.
Show
Ex: Nagkaasawa ka na ba?
Show
= Have you ever had a spouse?
Show
You can probably imagine a process in having a child or spouse, but how about:
Ex: Gusto niyang magkapusa.
Show
= She would like to have a cat.
Show
This implies that she would like to go through the process of acquiring a cat, or perhaps own one for a long time. Compare to just:
Ex: Gusto niyang kumuha ng pusa.
Show
= She would like to get a cat.
Show
The process is not emphasized with kumuha.
Magkaroon
Magkaroon is just a specific magka- verb which means to “come to have” or “acquire”. The root is mayroon, from which only roon is used to form the verb.
infinitive = magkaroón, aspects
Show
= nagkaroón, nagkákaroón, magkákaroón
Show
Ex: Baka magkakaroon sila ng anak.
Show
= Maybe they will end up having a child.
Show
Ex: Nagkaroon ka na ba ng asawa?
Show
= Have you ever had a spouse?
Show
Ex: Gusto niyang magkaroon ng pusa.
Show
= She would like to have a cat.
Show
Maging
One way to say “to become noun/adjective” is to use maging. Maging is a unique AF verb; it is not a ma- verb because it uses different grammar and stress patterns.
infinitive = magíng, aspects
Show
= nagíng, nagiging, magiging
Show
Notice that although it conjugates like a ma- verb, its uncompleted and contemplated stress patterns are different.
maging/naging/nagiging/magiging + noun/adj + noun2 (Tag.) = noun2 becomes noun/adj (Eng.)
Note: Noun2 takes ang form.
Ex: Magiging pangulo rin si Maria.
Show
= Maria will also become president.
Show
Ex: Nagiging pagod sila.
Show
= They are getting tired.
Show
Ex: Gusto kong maging masaya.
Show
= I want to become happy.
