Grammar
Just like in English, there are many ways to say items are the same or similar in Tagalog. In this lesson we will cover some of the most colloquial ones.
Same as a Noun: Pareho
As an adjective, pareho roughly means “the same”.
Ex: Gusto namin ang parehong sasakyan.
Show
= We like the same car.
Show
Ex: Hindi tayo pareho.
Show
= We (incl.) are not the same.
Show
Ex: Inaabangan nila ang parehong lalaki.
Show
= They are looking out for the same man.
Show
As an adverb used before an adjective, pareho roughly means “both”.
Ex: Parehong masaya ang aso at pusa.
Show
= The cat and dog are both happy.
Show
Ex: Parehong mura ang mga yun.
Show
= Those are both cheap.
Show
Notice that pareho is a host when placed before an adjective.
Ex: Hindi ko alam, kasi pareho silang maganda.
Show
= I do not know, because they are both pretty.
Show
As Adjective as: Kasing
Kasing is an adverb that modifies adjectives to roughly mean “as adjective as”.
Kasing + adj root + noun1+ noun2. (Tag.) = Noun 1 is as adjective as noun2. (Eng.)
Note: Noun1 takes ng form; noun2 takes ang form.
Ex: Kasing ganda rin ni Angel si Maria.
Show
= Maria is also as beautiful as Angel.
Show
Ex: Hindi po kasing init ng sasakyan ang pagkain.
Show
= The food is not as hot as the car. (resp.)
Show
Ex: Kasing mura ng mangga ang halo-halong inilagay ko sa lamesa.
Show
= The halo-halo that I put on the table is as cheap as the mango.
Show
Similar: Parang
As an adjective, parang is used before nouns to roughly mean “similar to” or “like”.
Ex: Parang si Jasmine si Maria.
Show
= Maria is like Jasmine.
Show
Ex: Hindi parang pizza ang pagkaing binili niya.
Show
= The food he bought is not similar to pizza.
Show
Ex: Parang guro ang babaeng iyon.
Show
= That lady is like a teacher.
Show
As an adverb, parang is used before adjectives and verbs to roughly mean “seems” or “it seems like”.
Ex: Parang gumawa si David ng halo-halo.
Show
= It seems like David made halo-halo.
Show
Ex: Parang hindi siya pagod.
Show
= It seems she is not tired.
Show
Ex: Parang ibibigay mo ang pera kay Joe.
Show
= It looks like you will give the money to Joe.
Show
Tulad (adj), gaya (adj) and mukha (adv) are fairly commonly used words that can have the same meanings as parang:
Ex: Tulad ni Jasmine si Maria.
Show
= Maria is like Jasmine.
Show
Ex: Hindi gaya ng pizza ang pagkaing binili niya.
Show
= The food he bought is not similar to pizza.
Show
Ex: Mukhang gumawa si David ng halo-halo.
Show
= It seems like David made halo-halo.
Show
But they are not as common as parang, so we will not use them any further.
Like This/That: Ganito/Ganun
Ganito/ganun can be used as adjectives or adverbs. As adjectives they mean “like this/that”, and as adverbs they mean “in this/that way”. Note that in this book, for the same reasons listed for iyan/iyon, we have reduced ganiyan/ganoon to ganun.
Ex: Ganito siya.
Show
= She is like this.
Show
Ex: Lumaki ito nang ganun.
Show
= It grew in that way.
Show
Ex: Hindi ko alam na magiging ganito.
Show
= I did not know it would be like this.
Show
When ganito/ganun are used with adjectives:
ganito/ganun + (ka + adj root) (Tag.) = this/that adjective (Eng.)
Ex: Ganun ba siya kapagod?
Show
= Is she that tired?
Show
Ex: Hindi ganun kabilis ang sasakyan.
Show
= The car is not that fast.
Show
Ex: Ganito sila kahirap.
Show
= They are this poor.
