Grammar
Verbs that have the nuance “to have/make/let someone do something” are called “indirect action verbs”. Sentences formed with these verbs can have two actors: a primary actor (actor) and a secondary actor (A2). The actor has/makes/lets the A2 do something.
There are many indirect action verb affixes, but this lesson will only cover magpa- and pa-...-in. Magpa- is the only affix that forms AF indirect action verbs, and can be used with all AF verb roots. Pa-...-in is the most frequently used of three affixes which are used to form A2F indirect action verbs, and can be used with -um- and ma- verb roots.
Traits of Magpa- Verbs
They perform an AF action.
They add the nuance of “to have/make/let someone do something”.
Used with all AF verb roots.
Magpa- Verb Infinitives
To form the infinitive, add magpa to the root of an AF verb (mag-, -um-, etc.).
Ex: magpa + root of gumawâ = magpa + gawâ = magpagawâ = to have someone do something
Ex: magpa + root of lumakí = magpa + lakí = magpalakí = to have someone raise/increase
Ex: magpa + root of pumuntá = magpa + puntá = magpapuntá = to have someone go
Magpa- Verb Aspects
Magpa- verbs aspects are formed as shown. Notice that it is similar to mag- verb aspect formation, with the pa of magpa getting repeated in uncompleted and contemplated aspects.
Ex: magpagawâ
Show
=> nagpagawâ, nagpápagawâ, magpápagawâ
Show
Ex: magpalakí
Show
=> nagpalakí, nagpapalakí, magpapalakí
Show
Ex: magpapuntá
Show
=> nagpapuntá, nagpápapuntá, magpápapuntá
Show
Magpa- Sentences
Magpa Sentence = Verb + actor + object (+ A2) + X
Notes: The Magpa Sentence is just an AF Standard Sentence with an optional A2. The actor takes ang form, the object takes ng form and X takes sa form. The A2 takes sa form with some exceptions.
Ex: Nagpagawa si Jason ng bahay.
Show
= Jason had a house made. No A2 required.
Show
Ex: Nagpagawa si Jason ng bahay kay David. =
Show
Jason had David make a house. A2 required.
Show
Ex: Magpalaki ka ng aso.
Show
= Raise a dog. (lit Have a dog grow up.) No A2 required.
Show
Ex: Magpalaki ka ng aso sa breeder.
Show
= Have the breeder raise a dog. A2 required.
Show
Ex: Magpapapunta ako ng sasakyan sa Maynila.
Show
= I will have a car go to Manila. Note that there is no A2; Manila is just a directional complement.
Show
With the root kain, it is possible to have A2 take ng form, but it changes the meaning:
Ex: Nagpapakain kami sa mga bata.
Show
= We make the children eat.
Show
Ex: Nagpapakain kami ng mga bata.
Show
= We feed the children.
Show
Traits of Pa-...-in Verbs
They perform an A2F action.
They add the nuance of “to have/make/let someone do something”.
Used with -um- and AF ma- verb roots.
Pa-...-in Verb Infinitives
To form the infinitive, add pa before and in (hin if it ends in a vowel – see in verbs for other spelling exceptions) after the root of an -um- or ma- AF verb. Shift the stress to the next vowel.
Ex: pa + root of gumawâ + in = pa + gawâ + in = pagawaín = to have someone do something
Ex: pa + root of matulog + in = pa + tulog + in = patulugin = to have someone sleep
Ex: pa + root of pumuntá + in = pa + puntá + hin = papuntahín = to have someone go
Pa-...-in Completed Aspect
Add pina before the root.
Ex: pina + gawâ
Show
=> pinagawâ
Show
Ex: pina + tulog
Show
=> pinatulog
Show
Ex: pina + puntá
Show
=> pinapuntá
Show
Pa-...-in Uncompleted Aspect
Add pinapa before the root. Note that if the root is stressed on the last vowel the first a in pinapa is stressed too.
Ex: pinapa + gawâ
Show
=> pinápagawâ
Show
Ex: pinapa + tulog
Show
=> pinapatulog
Show
Ex: pinapa + puntá
Show
=> pinápapuntá
Show
Optionally, you can duplicate the first syllable of the root in the completed form.
Ex: pinagawâ => pinágagawâ
Ex: pinatulog => pinatutulog
Ex: pinapuntá => pinápupuntá
But this is less common, so we will not use it from here on.
Pa-...-in Contemplated Aspect
Add pa before the infinitive. Note that if the root is stressed on the last vowel the a in pa is stressed too.
Ex: pa + pagawain
Show
=> pápagawaín
Show
Ex: pa + patulugin
Show
=> papatulugin
Show
Ex: pa + papuntahín
Show
=> pápapuntahín
Show
Optionally, you can duplicate the first syllable of the root in the infinitive form.
Ex: pagawain => págagawaín
Ex: patulugin => patutulugin
Ex: papuntahín => pápupuntahín
But this is less common, so we will not use it from here on.
Pa-...-in Sentences
Pa...in Sentence = Verb + actor + A2 + object + X
Notes: The actor takes ng form, the A2 takes ang form, the object takes ng form and X takes sa form.
