Show
Grammar
When you speak to someone who you do not know well, is older than you, has a higher status or you just want to be really nice to, it is best to soften your requests. This lesson covers how to make a request more polite or have the nuance “please”.
You have seen several ways to do this already.
Po
Po will make your requests more respectful.
Ex: Tawagin po ninyo si David.
Show
= Call out to David. (resp.)
Show
Ex: Ituro po natin ang gusali.
Show
= Let’s point out the building. (resp.)
Show
Ex: Buksan po ninyo ang pinto.
Show
= Open the door. (resp.)
Show
Nga
Nga can make a noun clause into a gentle request, or soften a standard request.
Ex: Tubig nga po!
Show
= Water please! (soft)(resp.)
Show
Ex: Ituro nga natin ang gusali.
Show
= Let’s point out the building. (soft)
Show
Ex: Dalawang mangga nga.
Show
= Two mangoes. (soft)
Show
Puwede
You can also make a request softer or more polite by making it into a question with puwede.
Ex: Puwede mo bang tawagin si David?
Show
= Can you call out to David?
Show
Ex: Puwede po ba nating ituro ang gusali?
Show
= Can we point out the building? (resp.)
Show
Ex: Puwede nga po ba ninyong buksan ang pinto?
Show
= Can you open the door? (soft)(resp.)

Paki-
Paki- can be added to non AF verb stems to give the meaning “please”. It is not used nearly as often as po and nga to soften requests in colloquial speech, so use it sparingly. Although its verb aspects can be used, normally it is used as an infinitive in imperative sentences, so we will only use it that way. Unlike normal imperative sentences, these do not take personal pronouns.
Ex: Buksan mo ang pinto.
Show
= Open the door. Notice that mo is used. But for paki imperatives:
Show
Ex: Pakibukas ang pinto.
Show
= Please open the door.
Show
Ex: Pakituro po ng Ingles ang bata.
Show
= Please teach the child English. (resp.)
Show
Ex: Pakikuha nga po ang aso.
Show
= Please get the dog. (resp.)(soft)
