A consonant cluster is formed when two consonants appear together, at the beginning of a syllable, without a vowel between them. Here are the sixteen Thai consonant clusters:

The tone of the syllable is determined by the class of the first consonant in the cluster. But notice that tone marks, and vowel diacritics are attached to the second consonant in the cluster.
