Low Class Consonants
Here is the third and last group of consonants – the low class consonants. There are a lot more low class consonants than middle or high; 23 low vs 9 middle vs 10 high. A tip for remembering consonant class: if you learn middle and high really well, you’ll know that any other consonant is low.

You’ve already learned three of these (ง, น, ม), but only seen them used as final consonants. If you listen to the consonant names, you’ll notice that the first syllable (คอ, ฆอ, งอ, etc.) always has a mid tone. Here’s the rule:
Tone rule seven – live low class consonant syllables with no tone marks have mid tones.
The only tone marks used with low class consonants are ่ (ไม้เอก) and ้ (ไม้โท). But the tone doesn’t match the tone mark.
Tone rule eight – low class consonant syllables with ่ (ไม้เอก) have falling tones.
Tone rule nine – low class consonant syllables with ้ (ไม้โท) have high tones.
And here are the rules for dead syllables with no tone marks:
Tone rule ten – dead low class consonant syllables with no tone marks and long vowels have falling tones.
Tone rule eleven – dead low class consonant syllables with no tone marks and short vowels have high tones.
