Today, let's talk about one great American movie I saw last year: The Truman show. The plot follows the life of Truman, who is a man that gets adopted by a television program when he was a baby. So, this TV show uses Truman as the main character of their reality show, following his steps all the time and providing entertainment for the whole country 24/7. The only person who was not aware of it was Truman himself, whose suspections started when he was around 30. Everything was too perfect: people used to walk out at the exact same time and say exactly the same thing, the traffic had a pattern, and travel agencies tried to persuade their customers not to travel because the city was flawless and people could be hit by a thunder during the trip. Basically, Truman, along his lifetime, is exposed to many harrowing experiences, provided by the program director, in order to be stuck in the same city. For instance, when he was in school he just wanted to discover the world and its beauties, being discouraged by the professor, who says that Columbus had done this already. Also in his infancy, as he liked to explore nature and see new places, when he was on a sea trip inside the city with his father, they simulated an accident in which his dad died, traumatizing him about going on trips.
Then, practically all film, Truman’s wills are manipulated and disrespected, and everything in his life is determined by the show makers. However, deep inside, the main character kept his adventurous spirit and infantile curiosity, that will be fundamental to lead him toward the truth.
And this is really interesting, because we are able to link the movie to our own personal experiences, like many factors in our lives prevent us from making autonomous decisions and thinking by ourselves. There are many people and obstacles that unable us to build an authentic personality and reach the truth. Happily, Truman achieves to get to know the truth and run his own life. What about us?
