Does "strange" make the comparative "stranger" or "more strange"?

For example, in "this situation is stranger than the previous one" or "this situation is more strange than the previous one"?

Examples: That story is strange. The second story is stranger than the first. That is the strangest story I've ever heard. That man is a stranger in town and nobody knows who he is. I'd avoid using "more strange" but probably some people would use it.
