Grammar
In this lesson, we will finish talking about telling time, and also cover the date. If you are not familiar with the months, which are borrowed from Spanish, please go to Appendix E at this time and memorize them.
Period of the Day
Period of the day, such as morning or evening, can be added to times using the possessive ng.
time + ng + period (Tag.) = time in the period (Eng.)
Ex: Lunes ng gabi.
Show
= Monday in the evening or Monday evening.
Show
Ex: Martes nang alas-tres diyes ng umaga.
Show
= Tuesday at 3:10 a.m.
Show
Ex: Sabado nang ala-una ng hapon.
Show
= Saturday at one in the afternoon.
Show
The Date
Here is how you ask the date in Tagalog:
Anong petsa na? (Tag.) = What date is it? (Eng.)
Notice that ano takes a linker, changing it to anong, in this sentence. This is how you answer it using Tagalog numbers:
Ordinal number + ng + Month. (Tag.) = Ordinal number of Month. (Eng.)
Ex: Ikalabinlima ng Mayo.
Show
= (The) fifteenth of May.
Show
Ex: Ikadalawampu’t isa ng Agosto.
Show
= Twenty-first of August.
Show
Ex: Ikaapat ng Hulyo.
Show
= Fourth of July.
Show
That Structure Equation works for Spanish numbers too, but we will only use Tagalog numbers for this in order to give you more practice with them. But the first day of the month is an exception:
Unang araw ng + Month. (Tag.) = 1st (day) of Month. (Eng.)
Ex: Unang araw ng Mayo.
Show
= 1st of May or 1st day of May.
Show
Ex: Unang araw ng Agosto.
Show
= 1st of August.
Show
Ex: Unang araw ng Hulyo.
Show
= 1st of July.
Show
Similarly:
Huling araw ng + Month. (Tag.) = Last day of Month. (Eng.)
Ex: Huling araw ng Mayo.
Show
= Last day of May.
Show
Ex: Huling araw ng Agosto.
Show
= Last day of August.
Show
Ex: Huling araw ng Hulyo.
Show
= Last day of July.
Show
Including a Year
You can add a year if you would like:
Date + taong + year. (Tag) = Date, year. (Eng)
Note: Taong is just taon + linker.
Ex: Ikalabinlima ng Mayo taong dalawang libo't lima.
Show
= 15th of May, 2005.
Show
Ex: Ikadalawampu ng Nobyembre taong isang libo, siyam na raan, walumpu't pito.
Show
= 20th of November, 1987.
Show
Ex: Unang araw ng Enero taong dalawang libo.
Show
= 1st of January, 2000.
Show
Combining Time and Date
Here is how you add a day and time to a date:
Day + ang + date + taong + year + time. (Tag.) = Time, day the date, year. (Eng.)
Ex: Linggo ang ikalabinlima ng Mayo taong dalawang libo't lima nang alas-dos.
Show
= 2 o’clock, Sunday the 15th of May, 2005.
Show
Ex: Biyernes ang ikadalawampu ng Nobyembre taong isang libo, siyam na raan, walumpu't pito nang alas-sais ng umaga.
Show
= 6 am, Friday the 20th of November, 1987.
Show
Ex: Sabado ang unang araw ng Enero taong dalawang libo nang alas-diyes.
Show
= Ten o’clock, Saturday the first of January, 2000.
