Grammar
This lesson will show you how to say that you dislike or do not want a noun using ayaw. How to do this with verbs will be covered in a future lesson.
Ayaw...sa - to dislike something indefinite.
Ayaw + experiencer + indefinite object. (Tag.) = Experiencer dislikes something indefinite. (Eng.)
Notes: The experiencer is the one who dislikes, and takes ng form. The indefinite object is the thing that is disliked and takes sa form.
Ex: Ayaw niya sa sapatos.
Show
= She dislikes shoes.
Show
Ex: Ayaw ni Diego sa tubig.
Show
= Diego dislikes water.
Show
Ex: Ayaw nila sa puno.
Show
= They dislike trees.
Show
Ayaw...ng - to not want something indefinite.
Ayaw + experiencer + indefinite object. (Tag.) = Experiencer does not want something indefinite. (Eng.)
Notes: The experiencer is the one who does not want, and takes ng form. The indefinite object is the thing that is not wanted and takes ng form.
Ex: Ayaw niya nun.
Show
= She does not want that.
Show
Ex: Ayaw ni Diego ng tsokolate.
Show
= Diego does not want chocolate.
Show
Ex: Ayaw nila ng sasakyan.
Show
= They do not want cars.
Show
Ayaw...ang - to dislike or not want something definite.
Ayaw + experiencer + definite object. (Tag.) = Experiencer dislikes/does not want definite object. (Eng.)
Notes: The experiencer is the one who dislikes/does not want, and takes ng form. The definite object takes sa form.
In theory, the ayaw…ang construction can mean “dislike” or “not want”:
Ex: Ayaw ni David ang tsokolate.
Show
= David does not want/like the chocolate.
Show
Ex: Ayaw niya ang basong ito.
Show
= She does not want/like this glass.
Show
Ex: Ayaw namin ang sasakyang nila.
Show
= We (excl.) do not want/like their car.
Show
But in the case of proper nouns and personal pronouns, it is pretty unusual to mean “not want”, so the meaning normally defaults to “dislike”:
Ex: Ayaw niya ang Maynila.
Show
= She dislikes Manila.
Show
Ex: Ayaw kita.
Show
= I dislike you.
Show
Ex: Ayaw ni Analyn kina Angel at Maria.
Show
= Analyn dislikes Angel and Maria.
