My first friend

In this post, I'll call my first friend "David". Well, we met at our first school 8 years ago. I was in my place and he came in my direction to ask my name. I answered and then I don't remember anymore.
We keep on studying together in all other years. We played soccer, volleyball, video games, etc. We did a lot of things together and we got a lot of friends. Last year, we were studying Math in a course, but David missed the course so much. I realized the course like an opportunity and I gave up all my free time to study Math.
Eventually, David backed away from our group. We all finished high school. I heard that he has been studying every week for college. We were close friends but were in a different way now. I'm studying English to being able to understand and communicate even more.

Thanks for the corrections.

Thank you for helping me. I wonder what the difference between "back away" and "drift away". Could you explain it to me, please?

you usually back away with a negative feeling like fear... you would back away from an angry barking dog... with friendships, that become distant we use the term drifted apart like a boat

In the usage above, back away is voluntary and drift away is involuntary.
