Learning Chinese - Cantonese

Im sorry I have to open another topic, but this issue has come up again. Earlier today I tried 5 or 6 times until I managed to successfully import a YT video. However, my last 5 or so attempts to import another one have not been successful. I get the same error as before:

Your video failed to import from YouTube.
Please check the URL as follows:
1. Right-click on the video and select the option “Copy video URL”
2. Paste the URL into the field below and try your import again

Last time it was quickly fixed, so I hope now you will manage again!

Thank you!

Hello!

Ive been having the same problem for a few days now - I get the following error when trying to import a video from YT:

Your video failed to import from YouTube.
Please check the URL as follows:
1. Right-click on the video and select the option “Copy video URL”
2. Paste the URL into the field below and try your import again

Ive already imported a few videos in the past without a problem so I wonder what may be causing this issue now. Hopefully its a temporary bug.

Looking forward to your reply!

Thank you!

Hello!

This may be an issue for all touchscreen devices using languagecrush through a browser, Im not sure.

I sometimes read on my iPad and find it quite frustrating that whenever I tap on a symbol (I study Cantonese) to get its definition, there is no way to to get the popup definition away unless I tap on another symbol somewhere in the text. In the end, having once activated the popover dictionary and there is a definition on the screen - there is always one. What makes this so, sorry if Im being rude, annoying is that the definition often obstructs parts of the text Im reading and have to intentionally tap on a symbol somewhere else to get its definition, only to be able to read the sentence Im at.

Do you think it would be possible to make it so that tappin on a blank space on the screen makes the popover definition disappear? Or by tapping on the definition itself it goes away? I hope I managed to explain well enough the issue at hand. If not - hopefully the attached video will help better describe the situation.

Thank you!

Hello, all!

Whoever is learning Cantonese and wants to use YouTube as a source for materials is undoubtfully aware of the fact that many (if not most) of the videos have hadrcoded subtitles burned onto the video, rather than soft (CC) subtitles which can be easily extracted.

After a bit of a research, I managed to find a solution how to extract the hardcoded subtitles in order to put them in a .txt file and use for reading along with listening to the audio here on LanguageCrush. Here is my method:

I used the following apps: https://cobalt.tools/ (to download the video. Of course it could be any other video downloading app)

VideoSubFinder (to rip the subtitles as separate image files as described in this video - https://youtu.be/y7gbDMMsLTg?si=jROzUBGoxKzDYSZE

ABBYY FineReader (to convert the image files into text and combine the text into a single .txt file)

As the video I used has both Cantonese and English subtitles, I did two separate extractions in order to put a translation in the passage as well. The final result you can find here : https://languagecrush.com/reading/course/1888

The series has a total of 10 videos which I will eventually turn into pasages and upload here as part of the Easy Cantonese course I created.

Overall, I will be doing my best to help increase the Cantonese database here on the site :)

Happy learning!

Hello!

Let me start off by saying that I enjoy the reading tool - it's not overcomplicated and has all the necessary functions I can think of (at least so far as I have been using it for about a week or so).

Apart from a dictionary related issue I have (already posted about it here https://languagecrush.com/forum/t/2095), there is something else that bugs me when using the desktop reading tool. I would normally read a text and have the translation loaded on the right side of the screen. Whenever I click on a word I want to mark in red or green, this would replace the translation text with the word's vocabulary entry. After I close this, it pulls up the translation once again, however, it goes back to the very top/beginning of it. Thats quite annoying as I have to scroll down to the desired passage I left off from. Not only that, but even if I highlight a word/piece of text from the translation as a bookmark if you wish - it's gone after the right part of the screen switches from vocabulary to translation text...

I hope I managed to explain this well:) If necessary - please let me know to provide further details/screenshots.

Thank you!
