Just to be clear, do you mean you are getting a notification, but when you select it doesn't open the notification?

When you select it, it doesn't open the message? What is your device/OS/browser?

Ok, we've changed some things to make it more user friendly. When you hit the envelope, you will be taken to your inbox (we re-named it "inbox" because people were confusing it with chat) where it will state "unopened mail". The unopened messages are now clearly highlighted to separate them from the others.
