Can I replace "yet" with "even" in these sentences: "The boss called us, telling of yet more problems", "Inflation had risen to a yet higher level", "Each empty room made the next door yet more threatening". Tricky words those two for a Portuguese speaker!
Yes (in the 2nd sentence "a yet" would change to "an even"), and they would be even more colloquial if you did. Yet sounds correct but a bit awkward in these sentences to me.

True. But again, this is sounds a bit awkward to my native ears. I recommend restricting it to this type of usage in colloquial speech:
I haven't been there yet.
They won't go yet.
etc
