It may be annoying to learn how to use accents in Spanish, but they are absolutely necessary. There are many words that are written the same but their accent makes them different:
The most common:
- papá / dad
- papa / potato or pope
You can twist the meaning of a sentence like "Llamemos a su " if you do not use the accent: "Llamemos a su ", you can easily turn "lets call his " to "lets call his ". Here are other words that use accents and can change the whole meaning of a sentence if you use them wrong:
- "Mamá" and "mama".
Mi es buena / My is good
Ella tiene cáncer de / She has cancer
- "Té" and "te".
Juan toma una taza de / Juan drinks a cup of
amaré por siempre / I will love forever
- "Jugo" and "jugó".
Un litro de jugo / A liter of
Juan mucho / Juan much
- "Más" and "mas".
No quiero tomar / I don't want to drink
Estudió no aprobó / He studied he didn't approve
- "Él" and "el":
no quiere a su novia / doesn't want his girlfriend
gato es negro / cat is black
